Vin Lananna to rekindle a Bowerman Tradition

To all citizens of TrackTown,

As we continue to grow and develop and look for new ways to make our great community even better, Vin Lananna would like to personally invite you to take part in our inaugural TrackTown Fitness program.  He will conduct the first session Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m. at Hayward Field.  This free program is open to all and will continue every Sunday through the fall.  It’s designed to teach anyone the fundamentals of how to run or walk for better health.  It will also serve as an on-ramp for other community training programs in January.

The TrackTown Fitness program is based on the concepts first taught by University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Bowerman more than 50 years ago.  His community jogging classes have been credited with sparking the running boom in the U.S. and we intend to use those same principles to make Oregon the healthiest state in the country by the time we host the IAAF World Championships at Hayward Field in 2021.

If you’ve ever wanted to be an active runner or walker but didn’t know where to start, this is your chance to learn the path to better overall fitness in a fun, social and welcoming environment.  Participation in local road runs is one of the most popular avenues to a healthy lifestyle and we believe this program will provide you with an important first step in making such events as the Eugene Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K more accessible as a runner, jogger or walker.

Please join us Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 a.m. at Hayward Field for your chance to be part of this historic revival of an Oregon tradition.

  • All participants should enter Hayward Field through Powell Plaza (corner of 15th Ave and Agate St).
  • On-Street parking only: Free on Sundays!
